My husband and I showed up at Maverick’s Las Vegas terminal a little early, mostly out of excitement. This wasn’t our first helicopter tour, but there was still that little flutter of anticipation as we checked in. The Moment I’ll Never Forget

Taking off again from down there was its own kind of unforgettable. One second we were standing on solid ground with the canyon walls towering above us, and the next the helicopter was lifting straight up, the bluff dropping away beneath us and the river shrinking smaller with every second. I caught the whole thing on video, and I still can’t stop watching it back — there’s something about seeing the canyon open up around you as you rise that no photo comes close to capturing.

The Flight Back

Getting back in the helicopter felt bittersweet, but the scenery on the way home kept us glued to the windows all over again.

A Few Things I Learned

If you’re thinking about doing something like this yourself, a few things I’d pass along:

• Book in advance — the sunset flights especially tend to sell out.
• Wear comfortable clothing. You’ll spend more time looking out the window than posing for photos.
• Don’t worry about capturing every second. Some of my favorite memories are the moments I put the camera down.
• Arrive a little early and let yourself enjoy the anticipation before takeoff.
