US Open Insider Tips: Tennis, Style & New York Energy

0

The US Open is much more than a tennis tournament. It is one of New York’s most exciting late-summer experiences — a combination of world-class tennis, fashion, food, shopping, celebrity sightings, and the unique energy of the city.

After attending the US Open many times, I learned that the best way to enjoy it is to make it a full-day experience. The magic is not only watching a match in a stadium — it is walking through the grounds, discovering different courts, seeing players up close, enjoying the food, and feeling the atmosphere around you.

1. Choose the Right Ticket Experience

Your ticket determines how much of the US Open you can explore.

🎾 Arthur Ashe Stadium — The Classic US Open Experience

Best for:

  • Seeing the biggest stars
  • A first US Open visit
  • Experiencing major matches and the famous night-session atmosphere

Your ticket includes:

  • Assigned seat inside Arthur Ashe Stadium
  • Access to Louis Armstrong Stadium, Grandstand, and outer courts (subject to availability)

Arthur Ashe Stadium is the heart of the US Open. Watching a match there, especially under the lights, is an unforgettable New York experience.

US Open, Arthur Ashe Stadium

However, after attending many times, my favorite strategy is slightly different: I prefer a morning session with an Arthur Ashe Stadium ticket.

Why? Because you get the best of both worlds. You have your reserved seat for the biggest matches, but you can also leave Ashe Stadium and explore the rest of the grounds. You can discover other matches, walk through different stadiums, and enjoy the tournament at your own pace.

🎾 Louis Armstrong Stadium — More Intimate & Energetic

Best for:

  • Fans who want to feel closer to the players
  • A more intimate stadium atmosphere
  • Great matches without the size of Ashe

You get:

  • Assigned Armstrong Stadium seat
  • Access to Grandstand and field courts depending on availability

Louis Armstrong Stadium offers a different feeling — the crowd feels closer, and the energy can be incredible during competitive matches.

🎾 Grandstand Stadium — The Hidden Gem

Best for:

  • Tennis fans who enjoy a closer experience
  • Discovering exciting matches
  • A more relaxed atmosphere

The smaller size creates a much more personal connection between fans and players. Some of the most memorable US Open moments happen away from the biggest stadium.

🎾 Grounds Admission — Best Budget Option

Best for:

  • Exploring the entire complex
  • First-week matches
  • Walking between courts

You can access:

  • Louis Armstrong Stadium (availability-based)
  • Grandstand
  • Outer courts

You cannot enter Arthur Ashe Stadium with only a grounds pass.

My favorite strategy: Visit during the first week if possible. You can see more players, more matches, and experience a lively atmosphere before the tournament becomes more exclusive.

2. Morning vs. Evening: Which Session Should You Choose?

After many visits, I personally prefer the morning session.

Arriving early gives you time to:

  • Explore the grounds
  • Watch multiple matches
  • Visit shops before crowds grow
  • Enjoy food without long waits
  • Find unexpected tennis moments

The evening session has a special energy. The lights, the crowd, and the excitement inside Arthur Ashe Stadium are unforgettable.

But evenings are also the busiest time. Many people arrive after work with general admission tickets just to enjoy the US Open atmosphere, have dinner, walk around, and experience the event.

Expect:

  • Longer food lines
  • Crowded shopping areas
  • More people moving between venues

For the complete experience, a morning ticket allows you to enjoy the tournament before the evening crowds arrive.

3. Experience Tennis Up Close

Watching tennis on television is completely different from seeing it live.

You hear the sound of the ball, feel the energy of the crowd, and see the emotions between points.

One of my favorite things about attending the US Open is that you never know what you might experience. Sometimes top players practice or play on the smaller courts, allowing fans to see them from much closer distances.

Those moments can feel even more special than a large stadium match because they create a more intimate connection with the players.

You may also spot famous faces. The US Open attracts celebrities, athletes, actors, musicians, and other public figures. Seeing a familiar face sitting among the crowd adds another layer of excitement to the New York experience.

4. What to Wear: US Open Style

The US Open has a different fashion personality from Wimbledon. It feels more New York — polished, modern, and a little playful.

Tennis-inspired fashion, often called “tenniscore,” has become a major style trend with pleated skirts, polos, sweaters, sneakers, and elegant sporty pieces.

Classic US Open Outfit Ideas

Women

  • White tennis dress + blazer
  • Linen pants + fitted polo
  • Silk skirt + simple top
  • Neutral cardigan for evening matches
  • Comfortable designer-inspired sneakers

Men

  • Polo shirt + tailored shorts
  • Linen shirt + chinos
  • Lightweight sweater over shoulders
  • Clean white sneakers

The New York Touch

Think:

  • Quiet luxury
  • Neutral colors
  • Gold jewelry
  • Sunglasses
  • Structured handbags
  • Comfortable but elevated shoes

A practical tip: it can be extremely hot during the day, and you may spend many hours walking outside. Choose clothing that will keep you comfortable all day. Bring a light layer because evenings inside the stadium can feel cooler.

5. Explore US Open Shopping

Shopping is part of the experience. Official stores around the grounds offer commemorative clothing, accessories, gifts, and tennis-inspired fashion.

🛍 US Open Collection

Perfect for:

  • Tournament hats
  • Sweatshirts
  • T-shirts
  • Souvenirs

🛍 Polo Ralph Lauren

A favorite stop for classic US Open apparel and tennis-inspired style.

🛍 Wilson

Great for:

  • Tennis memorabilia
  • Commemorative products
  • Seeing professional racket stringing

🛍 lululemon Pop-Up

A favorite for modern activewear and stylish tennis-inspired pieces.

My advice: shop earlier in the day. Evening crowds can make browsing much slower.

6. Food: What to Eat at the US Open

The US Open has become a food destination, not just a sporting event.

Popular choices include:

  • New York-style pizza
  • Lobster rolls
  • Tacos
  • Burgers
  • Ice cream
  • Cocktails
  • Champagne lounges

The Grandstand Food Village is a great area to explore different food options between matches.

If you attend an evening session, plan extra time for food because popular areas can become very crowded.

Don’t Miss the Honey Deuce

No trip to the US Open feels complete without trying the Honey Deuce, the tournament’s official signature cocktail. Made with vodka, raspberry liqueur, lemonade, and garnished with honeydew melon balls that look like tennis balls, it has become a tradition for many fans.

Even if you’re not a cocktail drinker, ordering one is part of the experience because it comes in the official collectible US Open souvenir cup, which changes design each year. You’ll see fans carrying the colorful cups around the grounds all day, and many visitors take theirs home as a keepsake from the tournament.

My tip: If you’re planning to buy a Honey Deuce, enjoy it earlier in the day before the evening rush, when beverage lines tend to get much longer.

8. Best US Open Experience for Different Visitors

First-time visitor:
→ Arthur Ashe Stadium ticket

My personal recommendation:
→ Morning Arthur Ashe ticket + explore other courts throughout the day

Fashion lover:
→ Grounds pass + shopping + smaller courts

Budget traveler:
→ First-week grounds admission

Serious tennis fan:
→ Louis Armstrong or Grandstand

Date night in NYC:
→ Arthur Ashe night session + dinner afterward

The US Open is one of the rare sporting events where the experience continues outside the court. It is tennis, fashion, food, culture, and New York energy all in one unforgettable day.

Bonus Insider Tip: Use the Official Grounds Map

Before you arrive, take a few minutes to look at the official US Open Grounds Map or download the US Open app. It makes it much easier to navigate between Arthur Ashe Stadium, Louis Armstrong Stadium, Grandstand, the practice courts, Food Village, and the merchandise stores.

I usually check the map before the tournament starts so I already know where I want to go first. It saves time, especially if you’re trying to catch matches on multiple courts or visit the practice courts before they get crowded.
