Where Toronto Feels Like a Summer Escape: Inside The Boulevard Club

On a beautiful summer afternoon, sitting outside for lunch with the lake directly in front of you, flower boxes surrounding the terrace, boats nearby and sailboats appearing on the horizon, it is easy to forget that downtown Toronto is only minutes away. Located on the shores of Lake Ontario in west Toronto, this private social and athletic club feels remarkably removed from the pace of the city.

The feeling is less “city club” and more summer by the lake.

And that waterfront setting is really the heart of The Boulevard Club.

The Boulevard Club dates back to 1905, when it began as the Parkdale Canoe Club with just 43 members who shared a passion for paddling.

Over the years, it evolved into a much broader sporting and social community. Its history includes several fires, the Great Depression, two World Wars and a devastating 1978 ice storm. Yet the club continued to rebuild and grow, maintaining its connection to sports, the water and community.

Today, the Club describes itself as a lakefront, multi-sport recreation and social club — and that combination is what makes it particularly distinctive.

It isn’t simply somewhere to play tennis or have lunch. It is designed as a place where members can spend an entire day.

The Lake Is the Main Attraction

The first thing you notice is the view.

The Club sits directly on Lake Ontario, with open water stretching out in front of it. The waterfront creates a completely different atmosphere from what you might expect from a private club in a major city.

During my visit, the lake was wonderfully calm. Sailboats were visible in the distance, while boats were moored nearby. The waterfront walk made it easy to take in the scenery between lunch, activities or simply relaxing outside.

The outdoor spaces are particularly appealing in summer. There are comfortable chairs where you can sit in the sun, enjoy the view and simply slow down.

It is the kind of setting where an ordinary lunch can easily turn into an afternoon.

Lunch With a View

The outdoor dining area is one of the Club’s strongest summer features.

Surrounded by flower boxes and overlooking the water, it has a relaxed, elegant quality without feeling overly formal. You can enjoy lunch outside while watching boats move across the lake and taking in the expansive view.

The Club offers several dining options, from more casual spaces to its Dining Room, along with seasonal waterfront dining.

There is something especially enjoyable about having a leisurely lunch outdoors when the setting itself becomes part of the experience.

The food is only one part of it. The view is part of the meal.

A Club Built Around Sport

While the waterfront atmosphere may be what first captures your attention, athletics are at the center of The Boulevard Club’s identity.

The Club offers a remarkably broad range of activities for adults, families and younger members.

Tennis is particularly prominent, with 10 Har-Tru courts outdoors in summer and indoor courts available during the winter season. The Club offers lessons, leagues, tournaments, drills and programs for different levels of play.

There is also badminton, pickleball, swimming, basketball, volleyball, indoor soccer, floor hockey, karate and fitness programming.

The fitness centre is another standout because of its relationship with the waterfront. Wide windows bring the lake into the space, creating a very different atmosphere from a typical city gym.

Imagine working out while looking across Lake Ontario.

That is one of those small details that makes the Club feel special.

And Then There Is the Water

The Boulevard Club’s history began with paddling, so it is fitting that water sports remain an important part of the experience.

Members have access to canoes, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and Hobie pedal boards, as well as sailing and dragon boating.

You don’t necessarily have to be a serious sailor or competitive athlete. The water can simply be another way to enjoy the setting.

The Club also has a full-service marina with docks for boats, along with sailing programs and organized waterfront activities.

For people who genuinely love being on the water, this is more than a pretty view — it is a lifestyle built around Lake Ontario.

Swimming, Fitness and Wellness

Aquatics are another major part of the Club.

There is a year-round indoor pool as well as a seasonal outdoor pool, with swimming programs and lessons for different ages and abilities. The Club also offers additional wellness amenities, including a cold plunge lounge and sauna facilities.

Combined with the fitness centre and extensive sports programming, the Club has created something closer to a complete recreational lifestyle than a traditional social club.

You can exercise, swim, play tennis, go out on the water, have lunch and then spend the afternoon relaxing by the lake — without having to leave the property.

A Place for Families and Community

Another important part of The Boulevard Club is its emphasis on community.

The Club offers programming for children and teenagers alongside its adult activities, with sports, swimming, camps and other programs designed to make membership something that can be shared across generations.

That family-oriented approach is part of what separates it from a purely formal or business-oriented private club.

There is also a strong connection to the surrounding Parkdale community. The Club supports local organizations and community initiatives, including programs involving youth sports, families and waterfront activities.

So while the Club offers a distinctly private experience, it also has a long history of being part of the neighborhood around it.

Events With a Waterfront Setting

The location also makes The Boulevard Club an attractive setting for celebrations, weddings and private events.

The waterfront provides a natural backdrop for outdoor gatherings and photographs, while the Club offers a variety of indoor and outdoor spaces.

And again, the lake changes the character of the experience.

A wedding, dinner or celebration here doesn’t simply take place inside a venue. The water, boats and open sky become part of the setting.

The Boulevard Club Experience

What stayed with me most from visiting The Boulevard Club was not one particular facility.

It was the feeling of the place.

Toronto was right there, but it didn’t feel like Toronto.

There was no need to drive somewhere far away for a relaxing summer afternoon. You could sit outside with lunch, look across the lake, watch sailboats on the horizon, take a walk along the waterfront or simply find a chair in the sun.

The combination of beautiful surroundings, attentive service, sports, dining and access to the water creates something that is increasingly difficult to find in a major city: a genuine sense of escape without actually leaving the city.

And perhaps that is The Boulevard Club’s greatest luxury.

Not extravagance for the sake of extravagance, but the ability to make an ordinary summer day feel like a little vacation.
